In connection with BARCH 2026, a special memorial event will be held in honour of the architectural historian James Stevens Curl. The conference aims to reflect on Curl’s work and influence while exploring how his legacy continues to shape current research and discussion in architectural history. Through his extensive scholarship and publications, Curl made a lasting contribution to the study of architecture and the understanding of the built environment.
The symposium is hosted by Dr. Nir Haim Buras from the Classic Planning Institute, together with A. Hagalisletto, founder of Beauty and Ugliness in Architecture.

A special student session organized by Astrid James will bring together several of Curl’s former students from different stages of his academic career. Architect John Smylie will also present material from Curl’s unpublished correspondence, offering insights into the historian’s exchanges with colleagues during the final years of his life.
The symposium concludes with a panel discussion led by Carl Korsnes and architect Eskild Narum Bakken, reflecting on the continuing relevance of architectural history and the future of well-designed and sustainable urban environments.
